More Details

I love lupins – their great plume flower spikes in early summer with that delicious candy floss-like scent. These are a classic of any cottage garden.

Lupin 'Gallery Blue' is a rare and unusual lupin with pea-like flowers combining an upper standard with lower petals fused into a keel. The keel part of the flower is a smokey blue-purple, which often lightens towards the upper standard – it will sometimes produce petals of pink, or even white.

Genus Lupinus
Variety Gallery Blue Shades
Type Hardy Perennial
Common Name Lupin
Border Position Back, Middle
Soil Type Neutral, Sandy
Scent Scented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Well-drained
Height 90cm (35in)
Spacing 60cm (24in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Dig a planting hole in well-drained soil. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting. Plant and firm in place. Water in well and protect from slugs and snails.
Care Tips Pick the flower spikes to encourage the development of laterals and a longer flowering season. Stake in spring. Watch out for aphids between April and September, rub them off by hand or with a blast of water, badly infested flower spikes can be removed.
Flowering June - July
Vase Life Plunge them in a bucket of water straight away this will stop the spikes bending towards the sun. The pea-like flowers tend to drop after 4-5 days.

Excellent quality. Strong healthy plants supplied that have grown well and are now in their second flush of flowers.
Colour is slightly disappointing, I was hoping for blue flowers as pictured, but they are bi- coloured blue/white giving a striped look which I'm not keen on in the garden so I'll be moving them to my allotment

I ended up buying two lots of three of these because I do like a good lupin. The first three did better than the second - maybe because they had a bit longer to establish? I was a little bit disappointed with the second lot planted a month later but I have a feeling they'll make up for it next year. Would recommend but get cracking sooner rather than later if you want the plant to perform in the first year.
