Delphiniums are great trumpet blasts at the beginning of June and in gardens that tend to the red and the pink at that moment in the year, this pair give you classic, reliable, and invaluable blue to purple spires. We’ve had these in the garden at Perch Hill now for 15 years.
This collection contains 1 or 3 plants each of:Border Position | Border (Back) |

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Delphiniums love well-drained soil, but are hungry feeders. This means adding plenty of grit on heavy soils to help with drainage, if they sit wet in their dormant winter season, they can die, so make sure you prevent this. To aid quick establishment, sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole. Correct spacing is also important to help avoid mildew. |
Care Tips | Feed regularly throughout their growing season with a slow-release feed, such as organic chicken manure pellets. Do this a couple of times in summer and try to repeat once in autumn before the plants die down. The other vital thing with delphiniums is staking, as any strong wind or heavy rain will flatten them and break their hollow stems. Cut flower spikes and leaves right to the ground in July and they will leaf up and flower again in August and September. Unfortunately slugs love delphinium shoots, so a dose of Nemaslug will help protect your plants. |
Flowering | June - September |
Vase Life | Fill the hollow stems with water, put your finger on the end and lower them into a water-filled vase. These should last 7 days in the vase. For tall spikes a cane can be inserted into hollow stem to prevent bending and breaking. Pick when most flowers are open. Do not put near fruit bowls as they are sensitive to ethylene gas which is omitted when fruit ripens. Sear stems ends in boiling water for 10 seconds before plunging into cold water and then arranging. |
