This is one of those plants that grows on you year-on-year. The first year we grew it I was impressed by its MASSIVELY long-flowering season. The next, I noticed its beautiful seedheads, almost as good as the flowers themselves, standing on the plant all autumn. Last year I fell for it again for its bright richness of colour. Don’t underestimate this apparently background, new agastache.
Genus | Agastache |
Group/Species | x hybrida |
Variety | Blue Boa (PBR) |
Type | Perennial |
Common Name | Mexican giant hyssop |
Border Position | Border (Middle) |
Soil Type | Broad Tolerance |
Scent | Foliage has a scent of liquorice |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Well-drained |
Height | 60cm (24in) |
Spacing | 45cm (18in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Plant in a sunny, well drained position to perform well in the border. To aid quick establishment, sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole. Displays are much more effective planted in groups of 3. |
Care Tips | Agastache prefers sunny free-draining soil but tolerates almost any soil and will cope with dry shade. They do not require extra feeding - this will only encourage leggy growth. The plants will be stronger and more floriferous if you cut back flower stalks as flowers fade. |
Flowering | July - October |
Harvesting | Flower production: 4 months |
Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
