Sowing, Seeds, Planting Agapanthus grow best in moisture-retentive soil in a sunny site that receives sun for most of the day. On heavy soils, mix in grit when planting. Space 30cm apart with crowns 5cm (2in) below the ground. Agapanthus are well suited to being grown in pots, which can then be brought into a conservatory or greenhouse for the winter. For containers use a good quality peat-free compost with slow release feed granules added for long term feed. You can also try planting into a pot and sinking into the ground, restricting the roots will encourage flower production.
Care Tips If you have not incorporated fertiliser when planting, apply a high potassium feed monthly, from spring until flowering. It may take two or three years for plants to establish before flowering really takes off. Large clumps can be lifted and split every four to five years. Overwinter with a dry mulch. If you are far north in the country, we recommend growing these in pots so that you can bring them out of the frosts for winter. Protect against slugs and snails.
