Sowing, Seeds, Planting Protect plants from frost in a sheltered environment whilst you pot them on ready to go outside, usually around May. A greenhouse is perfect but a windowsill or conservatory will do fine (16-18°C is ideal), with plenty of sunlight. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before moving to their final position. If growing in containers incorporate a slow-release fertiliser into the potting mix.
Care Tips A tuberous perennial that tends to go dormant in early summer. New leaves are often produced in early winter. Water very little during dormant season. Apply a home-made feed of comfrey juice, or organic liquid plant food (both rich in potash), every fortnight when growing. Cuttings are difficult to strike and are usually taken from inch tall flowering stems before blooming in February.
