Magnificent shuttlecock or ostrich fern, with huge bright-green fronds. A superb plant for the border or woodland.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Prefers a moist acidic soil in part shade but will tolerate light if kept moist. Pick a sheltered spot and sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting. For best effect plant in groups of 3 or more.
Care Tips The plant spreads slowly by underground rhizomes and, in time, builds up large groups on its own, which can be propogated by division in spring. Remove dead fronds when necessary.
Flowering Fronds from March to November, deciduous over winter.

These arrived in good condition and were planted in spring. They haven't put on as much growth as I had hoped but they are in quite clay-like soil. They are still alive and green(!) so I'll keep my fingers crossed for next year.

Delivered 3 roots and earth only - not even a little shoot. Note with delivery to tell me this was “normal”. My gardener actually laughed at me for trying to plant them! One out of 3 only has started to grow and in a few years time we are hoping to be able to see it without a magnifying glass. Feeling a bit conned.....
