More Details

I’ve long-loved Briza maxima and have been on the lookout for a similarly beautiful and delicate upper-storey perennial grass. Well, here it is, a widespread garden plant in the USA but not widely grown here. We’re missing out — this is an easy plant to grow and elegant; lovely cascading over a path at the front of a border, and in a vase. One of our new-found favourites at Perch Hill.

Genus Chasmanthium
Group/Species latifolium
Type Hardy Perennial
Common Name North America Wild Oats

Soil Type Acid, Alkaline, Chalky, Clay, Fertile, Neutral, Sandy
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Moist but Well-drained, Well-drained
Height 60-100cm (24-39in)
Spacing 40cm (16in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow at any time, in a well-lit position, into a good, soil-based compost. Cover seeds thinly and keep moist at around 15°C. Seedlings should be potted on and grown on singly, or in clumps for more rapid establishment of a large specimen. Prefers a fertile soil in full sun, add plenty of organic matter to the soil before planting.
Care Tips The fresh and dried seed stalks are wonderful in flower arrangements. Flower stems can be left on the plant through winter. They will naturally die back, but tidy up in spring by cutting back stems close to ground level.
Flowering July - August
Vase Life No conditioning needed.
Harvesting Flower production: 2 months, and seed heads for at least twice this time.
