Genus Baptisia
Group/Species x hybrida
Variety Grape Taffy
Type Perennial
Common Name False Indigo

Soil Type Acid - Neutral

Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Baptisia grows best in full sun, though it tolerates light shade. If grown in too much shade, plants may require staking. Baptisia is easily grown in poor to average soil that is well-drained. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant because of its tough, deep taproot. This perennial native may take a couple of seasons to become established, but is very long-lived once mature. Avoid disturbing established clumps.
Care Tips Deahead to prolong flowering but leave some at the end of summer to develop seed heads for winter decoration. Drought-resistant once established. Prefers not to be disturbed but large clumps may be divided in spring.
Flowering May - June
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
  • Sow Under Cover/Plant Indoors
  • Direct Sow/Plant Outdoors
  • Flowers/Harvest

These plants were sent as replacements for some i bought last year which for some reason didn't thrive. I didn't request them but you kindly sent them when I had reviewed them last time. They are all alive but not as robust as I hoped they would be by this time of year. i suspect it is something to do with my soil which is quite sandy so very free draining. I will keep an eye on them and learn from them as to whether I can grow them in future. As a garden designer, i use my garden as a trial bed before suggesting plants to clients so I feel that some I win and some I lose, as they say!

plants in 9cm pots still effectively plugs far too small and did not survive I will never buy plants from Sarah Raven again when bought as plugs good and bulbs excellent seeds poor germination when I complained a replacement was provided but it too was far to young to be sold as 9cm and did not survive

No growth, the plant just disappeared! Not sure whether this had something to do with the very late delivery.

Service good however the plant arrived looking like a dead stick although the roots were alive. Sadly it has not grown and is definitely dead. Very dissapointed as it looked lovely in the picture. Not sure the supplier should have sent such a poor specimin especially as the weather was not good at the time.

i feel this is rather an unfair survey as i ordered these plants early in the year and they arrived at the same time as the Beast from the East, Consequently, two withered and died very quickly and the third, which was doing all right but not thriving, has been nibbled by a rabbit so it is destined to be a bit slow! i therefore can't rate it any higher and will probably try again with new plants as they would be a great addition to my border.
