More Details

Large, soft curvy flowers in a soft mix of apricot and milky coffee, with enough crimson markings and central splotches to stop them becoming sickly-sweet. From an autumn sowing, will flower a little in January and February, but get going properly in spring. Or from spring sowing, flower all through summer. Their stems are long enough to make them great cut flowers.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow undercover, February-March (to flower May onwards), in trays of seed compost, cover seeds lightly. Keep moist and warm. Once seedlings appear and have developed two 'true' leaves, prick out and pot on into individual modules or pot. Grow the seedlings on in a light, frost-free place. Gradually harden off and plant out in late spring. May also be sown April-May for flowering from late summer onwards (except during the hottest summer weather). Autumn sowings can be overwintered in a greenhouse or cold frame for flowering from February the following year.
Care Tips Incorporate a slow-release fertiliser or give a balanced liquid feed every 2-3 weeks. Deadhead or pick regularly to prolong flowering and maintain a compact shape. If plants become leggy, a mid-season chop in July to 5cm (2in) above ground-level will help promote bushy re-growth.
Vase Life Sear stem ends in boiling water for 5 seconds to maximise vase life.
Harvesting Spring sowings will flower from May; Autumn sowings will flower from February the following year. Deadhead or pick regularly to prolong flowering and maintain a compact shape. Cut back hard if plants become leggy to promote bushy re-growth.
Cooking Notes All violas are edible - use them to decorate salads and puddings.
