For a small garden, buy one plant of each to flower all summer and autumn for years to come.
I love pinks. I love their scent, their incredible vase life, and that their petals are edible, so you can decorate salads and puddings to your heart's content.
This collection includes 1 or 3 young plants each of:Common Name | English Garden Pink |
Border Position | Cutting Garden |
Soil Type | Neutral - Alkaline |
Scent | Scented |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Well-drained |
Height | 45cm (18in) |
Spacing | 30cm (12in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Plant in a sunny spot, prefers a soil enriched with well-rotted manure or garden compost. Works well edging a garden path, may also be grown in a container. If growing for cut flowers, plant a row in the vegetable or cutting garden where they will have maximum light and air movement. |
Care Tips | Feed regularly with a rose or tomato fertiliser and try not to let the soil dry out. Dianthus will tolerate dry weather but will only produce continuous blooms if watered regularly, ideally at the base of the plant to avoid damaging the flowers. When the main stem has finished flowering pick or cut off the stem at the base of the plant in order to keep the plant tidy and to encourage repeat flowering. |
Flowering | June - October |
Harvesting | Pick the flowers when they are almost fully open, not in bud. Snap the stem at a node close to the base of the plant. If the stems are tough use snips or scissors to reduce the risk of damaging the plant. |
Cooking Notes | The flowers are edible, use the petals to garnish drinks or cocktails or add to recipes. |
