Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Protect plants from frost in a sheltered environment whilst you pot them on ready to go outside, usually around May time. A greenhouse is perfect but a windowsill or conservatory will do fine (16-18°C is ideal), with plenty of sunlight. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before moving to their final position. If growing in containers incorporate a slow-release fertiliser into the potting mix. |
Care Tips | Water plants well in summer and deadhead to encourage a second flush of flowers. Apply a home-made feed of comfrey juice, or organic liquid plant food (both rich in potash), every fortnight. Lift the plants with care and pot them up inside before the frost, cutting the top growth back by one third as you do so. They don’t go into complete dormancy, so water lightly through the winter. In spring begin feeding and increase watering. Plant out only once any danger of frost has passed. Please be aware that contact with the foliage may occasionally aggravate skin allergies. |
