Sowing, Seeds, Planting Dianthus prefer a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Hardy perennials can be planted out at any time of year provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Prepare the ground before planting by digging in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost before planting, and top-dress with a general-purpose fertiliser. Dig a planting hole that is slightly deeper, and wider than the container the plant arrived in. Gently remove from its pot and position in the middle of the planting hole. Aim to have the top of the root ball at the same level as the surrounding soil. Backfill with soil, gently firming as you go, and water in thoroughly. Dianthus may also be grown in a container.
Care Tips Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms and apply a balanced fertiliser in spring.
