Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Prefers full sun or light dappled shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Ideally the roots should be shaded with the top growth in sun against a wall, fence or other supporting structure, may also be grown through a large tree or trained as a free-standing half. Fork over the planting area, incorporating plenty of organic matter and dig a hole large enough to cover the root ball. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and use the depth that it was planted in the pot as your guide. Backfill and firm gently around the base of the plant before watering generously. |
Care Tips | Plants will dry out quickly, especially in a light or sandy soil, so keep plants well watered, particularly when newly planted and during dry periods. Top dress the base of the plant in spring with a high potash granular fertiliser, to encourage flower production. To encourage the development of flowering spurs, train your wisteria so that the side shoots and branches are horizontal, eg onto a wire secured to a wall or fence. In summer, after flowering, cut back the whippy green shoots of the current year's growth back to five or six leaves. In winter cut the same growth back further to two or three flower buds to ensure the flowers will not be obscured by leaves. |
