Sowing, Seeds, Planting Choose a warm, sunny but sheltered position to bring out the sweet fragrance. Will tolerate partial shade and colder positions, provided the soil is well-drained. Great planted in a pot and trained up a trellis. Use a minimum 30cm (12in) diameter container, cover drainage holes with crocks (such as broken pieces of old terracotta pots) to prevent compost washing through and fill with a good quality peat-free compost. When planting (in a container or in the ground) make a hole big enough to accommodate the root ball and sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi into the base of the planting hole. Position carefully so the plant is at the same depth as it was growing previously, backfill and firm gently around the base before watering in well.
Care Tips Feed containerised jasmine plants monthly with a high potassium liquid feed (such as tomato fertiliser). Border specimens can be top dressed with a balanced, granular fertiliser such as Growmore, or with an organic seaweed fertiliser. Hardy down to -10°C but may suffer from frost damage in colder winters. Prune after flowering to give new growth time to mature and flower early next season.
Flowering July - August
Vase Life Sear stems ends in boiling water for 10 seconds before plunging into cold water and then arranging.
