More Details

A fantastic, exotic looking plant with buds in green-white, deepening to purple as they age. This will clamber up and over your garden wall.

I've picked a bunch of these in December on a sheltered wall in Sussex. Use them floating in a shallow bowl or simply mixed with rosemary in a tumbler.

These are rampant climbers which will cover a wall in a trice – growing up to a 2nd storey window if given a climbing frame. Or, perfect for following sweet peas, as they flower long and hard from mid summer to winter.

Genus Cobaea scandens
Variety Purple
Type Tender Perennial (grown as a Half-Hardy Annual Climber)
Common Name Cup and Saucer Vine, Cathedral Bells
Border Position Climber
Soil Type Fertile, Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun, Shelter
Moisture Moist but Well-drained, Well-drained
Height 6m (20ft)
Spacing 15cm (6in) apart at the base of a frame or wall
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover January-March and support on a mini frame as it grows, then train onto a tall frame or wired wall. Plant out after last frost.
Flowering July - October, 20 weeks from sowing
Vase Life 5 days, can be floated with nightlights in a shallow bowl. Sear the stem ends in boiling water for 20 seconds to extend the vase life.
Harvesting Flowers will produce for 4 months, or almost 12 months of the year if grown in a greenhouse.

Quality of plants is excellent . Unfortunately the Cobaea scandens were disappointing as i was sent the wrong colour and by the time we knew it was too late to replace them. but Sarah Ravens refunded me the cost of them.. Customer service excellent. I shall buy them again next year , hopefully with more luck,

Ordered purple, but they were all white - very annoying. However, I did like them despite the colour.

Very mixed results. Those for pergola suffered from heat when we were away though watered by friend, and never recovered though did flower. Nothing like as prolific as expected and just withered. The others for fence never flowered, though the leaves are beautiful now scrambling over it, a rich burgundy.

I did not succeed well with this plant -our very hot dry weather from May -July seemed to stop it in its tracks and then our less than pleasant 2nd half of the summer did it no favours so while it grew like a triffid for a while it was not a happy plant. Was this my fault , being in a pot ? Quite possibly. I gave the others to friends ; in one case it grew lushly and covered a 6 foot obelisk in no time -it too a lot longer to flower but when it finally did it was worth the wait -beautiful robust trumpets, but our season has come to an end early in SW Scotland so after the long wait there won't be long to enjoy them. Perhaps Cobea would do better much further south

Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:

"Thank you for your review. It is likely that the unusual weather 'stressed' the plants which would have affected growing/flowering. Please contact info@sarahraven.com if you would like to discuss this further."

Disappointing. They have grown beautifully through a rose on our house right to the top but not a flower to be seen until today when I have just spotted one. Now the lower leaves are beginning to shrivel. Perhaps it has not been sunny enough to bring out the flowers.

I bought a whole bunch of plug plants and tubers in Spring, all for a clients cutting garden. I grew the plant on until they were 2/3Litre pot size. The plants were all good, strong and sturdy and I only have two that died off in around 275 plants. I was dissappointed with the dahlias though as the not all came true as per the label. I certainly didnt get the Labyrinth that I ordered.

Really my garden is too shady for these (walled, north facing) but I couldn't resist them. I ordered 5 seedlings and grew them on a bit in pots. I have one at the front of the house (south facing) where I am optimistic it will gallop away and completely smother our house (please!). I have 2 at the back against the far south facing wall where they seem to be very happy to cling to the bricks and make their way up the wall (the biggest is about 4 foot now). I planted one in semi shade as an experiment; that one is actually doing really quite well. My last one is in a really poor section of the garden (usually referred to as death row!) where it has galloped up a little bay tree. I'm hoping to encourage it onto the trellising on top of the nearby wall. I can't wait to see them go crazy and hopefully flower their doo-dahs off all summer.

Cobaea scandens - just glorious !

These seeds really took off this year, I germinated and planted 5 seedlings around two 12 ft wooden obelisks. The foliage quickly covered them and we had perpetual flowering from August right through until early December. Simply stunning ! Great for cut flowers, they have a slightly chocolaty smell. This year I am going to try and train them over a perimeter fence.

DISAPPOINTED

The plants have shot up our west facing wall but we haven't had a single flower.

Pruning instructions would be useful.

Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:

"Thank you for taking time to review our site. We would normally expect the Cobaea seedlings to be flowering by now, but like quite a few plants it does seem to be later this summer to get going. Being a native of Mexico it likes a run of warm weather to encourage flowers and we suspect the changeable weather we have experienced this year has not helped. Having said that, being one of the later annual climbers to get going means that it does flower right up until the frosts and if you are growing it in a pot then you could fetch the plants inside to a greenhouse or conservatory to continue enjoying the flowers. Keep the plants moist if we have a dry spell and fingers crossed you will start to notice the flower buds very shortly.
