No autumn garden is complete without its Michaelmas daisies, simple cottage garden perennials which flower long and hard in any soil. We have chosen only the very best to include here, which all grow quickly and easily and have good mildew resistance.

Genus Aster
Group/Species x frikartii
Variety Mönch
Type Hardy Perennial
Common Name Michaelmas daisy
Border Position Middle
Soil Type Acid, Chalky, Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Moist but Well-drained, Well-drained
Height 70cm (28in)
Spacing 40cm (16in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Plant in full sun, soil should be well-drained and average to humus-rich. Allow good spacing between plants to aid air circulation and help prevent problems with mildew. Add grit to the base of the hole on heavy ground. Water until established.
Care Tips Cut back in late Autumn. Pinch in midsumer to encourage a great flowering season. Most asters will need dividing every fourth year to maintain vigour which is best done in spring as new growth starts. Lift the clump and split using two back-to-back forks. Take care as old stems can be sharp. Discard old woody pieces and use newer sections from the outside of the clump to re-plant.
Flowering July - October
Vase Life They will look good for a fortnight. If you strip all the leaves below the water line and thin out the leaves up the stem a bit more, and put a drop of bleach in the water, it will maximise the cut-flower potential.

Well-packaged. Has grown quite well, although more leggy than bushy. Flower buds haven’t yet opened so can’t assess the quality of the flowers.

Poor specimen had to be replaced. Replacement much better. This leads to questions about what standard is used to decide when a plant is ready to send out.
