More Details

Angelica gigas is an impressive and statuesque umbellifer with huge, yet elegant domed, crimson flowers.

It is one of my very favourite plants – Angelica gigas looks fantastic and the scented beetroot-coloured flower heads are adored by bees, butterflies and – in the autumn – birds. I love it for the back of the border and cut it to arrange all summer and much of autumn.

Genus Angelica gigas
Type Short-lived Perennial
Common Name Purple Angelica, Korean Angelica
Border Position Back
Soil Type Heavy Clay, Neutral
Scent Scented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 1.5m (59in)
Spacing 45cm (18in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow in March - May under cover. We recommend that the seeds are only lightly covered as they do need light to germinate. You may also find that a period of hot-cold helps with the germination of these seeds, as they can be slow to germinate. Plant out once roots have filled a small pot.
Care Tips Try adding this to the back of a herbaceous border. Mulch deeply in dry conditions. To prevent it from self-seeding, deadhead after flowering, or leave to self-sow. May need staking.
Flowering May - July, the following year (and up until December for the seedpods)
Vase Life 14 days, or excellent dried.
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

I too love this most unusual plant. Unfortunately I lost 2 planted in the ground but the potted up one is fine this year. I did not realise that they are biennial which is nice, I'm hoping that they will self-seed as I note there are none to purchase right now. I only knew about them because a friend found one in her garden that she did not plant as far as she was aware. We photographed it fortunately before their gardener pulled it up and said it was a weed. I went on a short gardening cruise with Alan Titchmarsh and 4 other male BBC GARDENERS WORLD gardeners and only one of them knew what it was. I also took the photo to 3 large local garden centres and no one knew what it was.
