Common Name Dahlia
Border Position Cutting Garden
Bulb Size I
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 1.2m (4ft)
Spacing Plant just under the soil surface, 75cm (30in) apart.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Plant just under the soil surface after the last frosts. Alternativley pot them up undercover March or early April in a generous pot (at least 2 litre) filled with multi-purpose potting compost. Place them in a light, frost-free place and keep the compost moist. Pinch out their growing tips when they have reached about 8" tall. They will have formed bushy plants by the time the frosts have ended and will be in flower by the beginning of July. If you don’t have anywhere to grow the potted tubers, you can put them straight into the ground when the frosts are nearly over, mulching them or protecting with a cloche or protective horticultural fleece if the foliage appears before the frosts are over, but this will delay flowering.
Care Tips Support with a stout stick, tie in every couple of weeks. In the south you can mulch deeply and overwinter them in the ground, alternatively, lift and overwinter your dahlias frost free undercover.
Flowering July - November
Vase Life Only pick dahlias in full flower. Recut the hollow stem ends under water to avoid airlocks.
Harvesting Flower production 5 months
Cooking Notes All dahlia flowers are edible. I use the petals scattered over salad and to decorate a range of puddings

Never grown dahlias before but my husband wanted some. We are container gardeners so these were ideal. They are strong and healthy plants that have produced lovely flowers.

Growing very healthily so far, the how to videos on the website really helped. Hoping they will flower soon!

They started off well, but none of the dahlias have flowered yet (it is now 1st August) and 4 of them are unfortunately nowhere near flowering. As some of the tubers had broken off in the packaging I managed to get 5 plants from the 3 tubers ordered. One of them is close to flowering now, so I'm optimistic about that plant. The slugs have almost destroyed one of the plants.

Out of all the dahlia tubers I have had only one come through, I followed the instructions very carefully as I haven’t grown dahlias before.
I can only think it was slugs taking the tops off as I did see another with shoots poking through. I dug up a tuber the other day after about 2 mother in the ground and they were all slimy, so then dug up the rest and they were all slimy and roting .which is a bit strange with it being so dry .
I am carefully watching the one that has come through .
And would appreciate advice as Inwould like to try again next year.
Thank you

Well sized healthy tubers, which I planted immediately and all are now in flower. The various collections are a great way of colour coordinating your flower beds. Will def purchase from Sarah Raven again.

I have bought dahlias from Sarah Raven in previous years. These have not grown much at all, in fact only 1 has started to flower. Hopefully they will be better next year.

I bought 2 sets of these (one for a friend). In both cases “Linda’s Baby” failed to grow. I contacted Customer Services and new tubers were promptly sent out. My new one has grown but not flowered yet. The other 2 dahlias are doing fine. I’ve bought a number of plants from Sarah Raven and had mixed success but have always found the Customer Services team willing and quick to help.

I had 9 tubers but only 5 or 6 look like they have buds on and none are actually in flower yet so I can't comment on that.

From the pictures and description, I expected these to be a pink and white collection possibly also tending to red. One of the dahlias is in fact a beautiful blush pink but sadly only one of the two tubers supplied has come up. The others can only be described as orange to my mind and not at all what I expected. I must confess to being a little disappointed.
