Fritillaria raddeana is my new favourite flower, the earliest of all the frits, starting in February, with great naturalness and poise. And its seed pods are almost as lovely as the flowers themselves. Truly — more of us should grow this. With a ruff of the pink scilla and a ivory centre from narcissi, this pot went on and on looking good.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Fritillaria and Narcissus should be planted 6-8" (15-20cm) deep ideally in rich soil, which has had fertiliser added, preferably one that is well drained, so the bulbs can have a dry dormancy in the summer. |
Care Tips | They would benefit from an annual feed of potash rich fertiliser. Watch out for slug damage on the emerging Fritillaria. |
