The best all round garden and flower arranging allium. 'Purple Sensation' starts to flower after the tulips in mid-May.

I'll pick flowers and then beautiful green bead-like seed heads until the end of July and I use them to decorate the tree at Christmas – simply cut them, then dry and spray silver.

No early summer garden is complete without a good drift of these.

Variety Purple Sensation
Type Hardy Perennial Bulb
Common Name Ornamental onion
Border Position Middle
Bulb Size 10/+

Soil Type Chalky, Fertile, Sandy
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 90cm (36in)
Spacing Plant 10-15cm (4-6in) deep, 10-15cm (4-6in) apart.
Care Tips Remember these are very perennial so plant them somewhere permanent. Removing the tatty foliage doesn't appear to affect the bulbs. Add grit on heavy soils. Potted Alliums can be kept in the pots and allowed to flower for their first season. Either sink the pots directly into the border or place into a larger container. Once they have finished flowering, feed with comfrey tonic and leave them to die back naturally in the pots, this will help bulk up the bulbs for next year. When the bulbs have completely died back, lift them and plant out into their permanent garden position. Alternatively you can plant out the pot grown Alliums from February to May before they flower. A root system will have established, so take care when transplanting into position and be sure the planting depth matches that of the pot.
Flowering May - June
Vase Life Add a drop of bleach to the water to minimise the oniony smell or change the water regularly. They will look good for up to 2 weeks without rearranging.

All very good but only 13 of the 15 bulbs came up this year - I don't know what happened to the other 2 but there wasn't even any leaves. If they had all come up you would definitely have received 5 stars.

Allium bulbs were of very high quality and gave a lovely display, better than ones from local garden centre. Tulips for shade were exceptional and I will buy more. Bulbs were well packed and delivered when expected. I will order more this year.

I purchased a number of Allium bulbs back in the spring and they performed beautifully! They grew tall and proud and with a perfect globe of tiny flowers. I purchased a number of Allium varieties and planted them in groups or individually in strategic spots in the garden all viewable not only from the garden but also from all the windows at the back of the house. The garden looks like a naturally planted wild meadow in parts and more structured in others. I treat my garden like painting a canvas.and it seems to work as everyone loves it! Sometimes it grows organically and at others more structured thought is at play. All good fun and keeps me out of mischief even more so since I retired 2 months ago. I can spend, and mostly do, all my time in the garden. My bulbs arrived right on time for planting, were well packaged and protected. Excellent buy and I would recommend! I missed the boat a couple of years running by not ordering in time but finally this year I have my Alliums blooming in the garden! Excellent bulbs. of good quality well formed and healthy bulbs with planting and care instructions. I would recommend to anyone who wants/likes a bit of architectural plants to offset a "planted wild" garden.

I am beyond delighted with all of my Allium, bought to create a special flowerbed to remember my friend Norman who loved nature. The blooms attract bees and Norman would be as delighted as the bees with the results!

I couldn't resist the pictures in the catalogue, but was rather sceptical how this plants would fair at our wind-swept hilltop site with heavy clay soil. I shouldn't have worried - of the 15 bulbs planted, 12 came up and provided us with a long lasting, outstanding spectacle. They stood tall despite very stormy weather and provided interest even before they were in full bloom. As they are planted along a path it is impossible to go passed there without stopping and admiring them, noting every change and taking many photos of each stage of development at every possible angle!
