A cross between standard and Chinese broccoli, with long, tender and sweet stems similar to sprouting broccoli and just as delicious, in salads, stir-fries or simply steamed.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover March-April in trays of seed compost. Transplant into individual pots when large enough to handle. When 5-6 leaves have formed transplant to final position with 45cm between plants and rows. Sow direct March-June into well-prepared soil. Sow thinly at a depth of 1.5cm (3/8in). Keep moist. Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil in full sun.
Care Tips Choose a sheltered position with fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Prepare the soil in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure. Protect from cabbage white butterflies and water well after planting.
Harvesting August - December. The main or central heads should be cut first when they reach 10cm (4in) in diameter, before the flowers open, this will encourage plenty of side-shoots to form. Continue harvesting side shoots. Will withstand some frost, so it may overwinter in some areas.
Cooking Notes Cook for only about 8-10 minutes either steamed, sautéed, boiled or stir-fried.
