- About Me
I am a portrait miniaturist, and teacher,(ex Fashion Designer and graduate of the Royal College of Art). Now retired apart from the part time teaching. I grow my own salad (in a cattle trough outside the back door) and in raised beds down the garden, I grow what we eat most of, during the year. I have a small greenhouse, to grow seedlings, and tomatoes and peppers.
I cook all our food from scratch on my Aga ( no other cooker). I enjoy trying out new recipes. Pasta and making veg a main part of the dish. Not too much meat and dairy, for health reasons.
I am married (to Brian another artist/etcher sculptor) I am 67, we have two sons, 40 @43 and two grandchildren. 5@ 8 mths. We live on Ditchling Common, W Sussex, and enjoy relaxed gardening, not too formal. In the main growing season, its a toss up between painting and gardening. This year I have managed to grow enough salad leaves ready to pick even now, December, with more coming. I have not quite got the sequence of my flowers right yet. But in June the scarlet poppies & purple aquilegia look stunning and are always admired.
l listen to Classic FM and Radio 4 while painting, sometimes when gardening too. We visit Italy (Anghiari) for the food and a Music Festival in July, and the Lake District for the walking. I am quite practical, and am always trying out new ideas, both in the home, garden and in my artistic pursuits. The latest of which is a commission to copy a valuable old master for its owner, to show how the same picture would have been painted in the 21st Century.
Have been to Perch Hill several times. l use the Garden CookBook a lot, and wrote how useful and sensible I found it, on Amazon. I like the Gardening part of the Telegraph on Saturdays too, and read books like Beth Chatto and Christopher Lloyds letters to each other, Adams book on finding Perch Hill, and am about to read Monty Dons Ivington Diaries, Xmas prezzie I think!
