Aster chinensis 'Blue' (syn Callistephus chinensis) is really an amethyst purple not blue, perfect for autumn posies with Japanese anemones and cosmos.
A hugely long-flowering, long vase life cut flower, these asters are lovely, easy and hugely prolific, best in the single colour forms.
| Genus: | Aster chinensis (syn Callistephus chinensis) |
| Variety | 'Blue' | Type: | Half-hardy annual |
| Sowing: | Sow March-June | Site: | Moist but well-drained soil in full sun. | Height: | 60cm (2ft) | Spacing: | Plant 30cm apart. | Hardiness: | Hardy | Care tips: | Do not allow the soil to dry out, protect from aphids and slugs. | Flowers: | ❀ July - October | For the vase: | They will look good for a fortnight in water. If you strip all the leaves below the water line and thin out the leaves up the stem a bit more, and put a drop of bleach in the water, it will maximise the cut-flower potential. |
