Allium bulbs (ornamental onions) are dead easy to grow, and are incredibly long-lived. Despite my heavy clay soil (which I lighten with grit when planting), allium bulbs get better every year in my garden.I love alliums for adding late spring and summer pizzazz – strong colour and shape to the border, and they are excellent for cutting. As well as the sparkler pompom flowers, we use the seed heads for arranging later in the year and sprayed silver, alliums make the best Christmas decorations you’ll ever see. No ribbon or wire needed – just stand back from the tree and lob them. They’ll stick firmly wherever they land.
