Quick Overview

Squash Early Butternut (organic).

Product Description

I think 'Early Butternut' is one of the tastiest squash you can grow with rich, waxy orange flesh. It's expensive to buy in the shops, so far better to grow your own. Once the growing shoots are about 4ft long, pinch out their tips and eat them (dipped into tempura batter and fried or delicious in an omelette). This stops them growing like a triffid and helps to ripen the fruit.
  • EASY but needs quite a bit of space
  • Sow: March-May
  • Seeds: 10

Sowing: Sow under cover from late Mar-May, 2 seeds pushed (on their sides) 2.5cm deep in a 7cm pot of compost. Once germinated remove weaker seedling. Can be direct sown in June.
Final Thinning/Planting Distance: After last frosts, when they have 5-6 leaves plant outside 90cm apart.
Harvesting: Pinch out growing tips of all branches at about 2m. Fruit will then start to form. If you want lots of small fruit, keep picking the squashes young. If you want them to grow larger, leave the fruit on the plant for as long as you can
