Product Description

This course will be run by Sarah and Dr Steve Head, who advised Sarah in her latest BBC2 TV series - Bees, Butterflies and Blooms. Steve is a wildlife garden expert and Coordinator of the National Wildlife Gardening Forum. He is dedicated to reversing the decline of endangered wildlife species such as hedgehogs, holly blue butterflies and bumble bees from our gardens.

About the course

Looking at new garden developments at Perch Hill we will guide you on how to improve and encourage wildlife and pollinators back into your garden.

The day lasts from 10.30 till 3.30 including tea / coffee on arrival, morning tea/coffee break with homemade biscuits and a delicious 2 course lunch using fresh produce from the garden at Perch Hill.

Session 1 10.30am -11.30am

  • Meet Steve and Sarah
  • A tour of the Perch Hill garden to open the moth, mammal and pitfall traps left overnight (this is done early in the day to let the beauties go)
  • Steve and Sarah will go through relevant handouts, books they recommend, helpful websites and forums etc.

    Coffee/Tea

    Session 2 11.40am - 1.00pm

  • Steve will talk you through why gardens are important for wildlife, creatures in the garden and his top ten tips.

    Lunch

    Session 3 2.00pm - 3.15pm

  • Steve will discuss planting principles and issues (role of plants, native/non native, seasons, rare plant conservation, heritage varieties, special habitat plant sets etc.)
  • Sarah will recommend plants for pollinators and walk you through the garden to show examples of good pollinator plants.

    Q and A with Steve and Sarah 3.15pm - 3.30pm
