Lonicera periclymenum 'Scentsation' has recently been selected for its even more powerful scent than the others, with wonderfully pretty flowers.
If hedge and wall climbers had a beauty parade, Honeysuckle could win Miss British Isles. Its deep crimson buds give a jewel-like richness to late spring hedges, fading to a dusky coral-pink just before they bloom.
The open flowers are a random mixture of yellow and white in the petals and the anthers, backed by fresh green, coin-shaped leaves. The overall shape is winning, too, with the flowers held up bold and strong on long crimson stems.
It is no wonder that William Morris used it to decorate his furniture and wallpapers. Honeysuckle's intoxicating, sweet scent is particularly strong at night – pollinating moths may detect it from a quarter of a mile away. We all need to grow one or two.
