The Classic Butterfly Border Design
I was brought up on this classic colour combination in my parent’s garden at Docwras outside Cambridge and this plant combination is inspired by that.
A beautiful mix of pink, sky and deep blue with silver Artemisia for foliage. The butterflies can feast on the Peony nectar from late May, with the Loosestrife (Lythrum Salicaria ‘Blush’), Veronica gentianoides and single Dahlia ‘Blue Bayou’ following on.
I have used 6 plant varieties in this border : a total of 10 plants
Suggested Border Size: Width 2m 7ft by Depth 1.2m 4ft. Sunny aspect.

- Dahlia ‘Blue Bayou’ x1
- Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ x 1
- Baptisia australis ‘Blue wild Indigo’ x1
- Peony’ Bowl of Beauty’ x1
- Lythrum salicaria ‘Blush’ x3
- Veronica gentianoides x3
Sarah’s Tip: You could always add Angelica gigas and Euphorbia cornigera ‘Goldener Turm’ to run along the back of the border to link to a Venetian Glass Perennial Border for a 15ft bed.
