Gladiolus communis subsp. byzantinus is one of my favourite May flowers when the tulips go over but the roses and summer perennials are yet to get going.

It is a wild flower of the Mediterranean, where its magenta spires stud the olive groves through May and June. It's also naturalised in the South-West – Cornwall and the Scilly Isles (where it's called Whistling Jack) and is 100% hardy in the garden here.

Most gladioli you plant in the spring, but these species varieties you plant in the autumn. They also look wonderful in pots.

Care Tips Water regularly and plentifully during the growing season and stake taller varieties.
Flowering May - July
Vase Life Remove the bottom leaves. Some people remove the top of the spike to encourage more flower but I think this is a shame as the twists and turns of the spike are part of the appeal.
