This snakeshead fritillary (Fritillarias meleagris) in plum and white looks brilliant at the front of a border or naturalised in grass, happier on heavy soils than on dry chalk or sand.

If you want them to get established, you must leave plants to set seed and so do not mow until late June/July. They will then slowly naturalise as they do in the wild.

If you miss the boat planting your bulbs in autumn, then buy them ready potted for your chance again to have beautiful spring bulbs to scatter around your house and garden for flowering within a few weeks.
