tulips in a 'problem pot'?

Hi,

I've posted this in two places as i'm not sure where best to put it - in the summer I grew some courgettes in a large wooden pot they were growing fine and I had quite a good crop but then mid-way through the season the leaves became covered in a white, dusty type substance which seemed to eventually kill the plants.

First of all what was this - was it mildew?

Secondly I now want to plant some tulips in that pot.  Is this wise or will they just get infected too?!  I know I really should clear out all the compost and then try and clean the pot and start from scratch but that just seems like so much hassle - am I just being too lazy and will I regret it if I just pop the tulips in there without doing a thorough clean first?

Sorry - I've only just seen

Sorry - I've only just seen your courgette question. I've always had exactly the same problem and it does sound like mildew. I think it's pretty hard to get a crop of courgettes without a little mildew, probably the best way to avoid it, is keeping the leaves as dry as possible or apparently (although I haven't tried it) the old diluted fairy liquid trick works...

For the tulips, I would disenfect the pot just to be safe... hope it's a help if not a little late!
