Hi - I bought some Amaryllis from Sarah Raven a few years ago and received a sheet on how to grow and store them, and I've it found it so hepful - I'll quote what she says (which I've tried and tested with success!)
After blooming cut down the flower stems and put the pot out intot he garden or a cool greenhouse, treat as a normal pot plant, watering regularly and allow the foliage to die back. They are not hardy so don't plant them out itno the garden. As the foliage dies down reduce the watering until by the autumn, the soil is all by dry. When the leaves are completely shrivelled you can remove them and put the pot back into the dark. Leave the bulb to gather its energy, ready to repeat the flowering process all over again. don't re-pot it for the first couple of years; it will resent its roots being disturbed.
We are in a tiny village near Heathfield. Like you we ended up with a much bigger garden than we had before. Mostly, at the moment it is a footie pitch or cricket pitch and at the moment the new found sport to be doing - a rugby pitch, but I am reclaiming bits to plant in - slowly so no-one notices!
Worth a drive if you love roses - Wych Cross Nursery. You're on the forest then too which is an adventure place for boys of all sizes!
Although my garden is scary, I am just starting, have ordered some bare root roses. I had pale pink and white ramblers in London, but the lovely thing is here now that I have so much room, is that I can have my favourites from before, but have been very daring (for me!) and ordered a red one 'Souvenir de docteur Jamain' Isn't that a fabulous name!
I drive my son to school in Brighton, and it is the most beautiful drive, for that reason alone, I am happy to be here! Where in Sussex are you?
HI I am new too. It is rather nice being a pioneer!
I have just moved to Sussex,to a much bigger garden than I had in London, and it is exciting, but daunting. The members so far seem to be a lovely mix of experienced and new gardeners.so am looking forward to sharing ideas,
Hello from the island of Unst, Britain's most northerly island in the Shetland Islands. I have lived here since 1992, struggling to succeed in gardening with all the wild and windy elements these northern climes have to offer! So I am looking forward to hearing about how you're all succeeding or otherwise with your gardens. Christine
