does anyone know about sewing machines please?

I have a frister- Rossman electric machine (no computer just quite basic one) that someone gave me but it hadnt been used for a long while. I got it serviced and it worked fine, but I have recently had problems with it missing stiches. I am making a dress out of some lovely light glazed cotton fabric (not furnishing fabric) for next summer, but every time I try and sew, the stiches dont stay in the fabric and unravel or are completely missing. I have tried adjusting the stitch tension lever and stich length but nothing seems to be right. I have looked up the problem in a sewing book I have got but it dosent seem to be very helpful. Any suggestions would be welcome please!!!

I've had this problem too and I've never really found out why it happens but sometimes changing the needle helps - if you find the answer I'd love to know why.
