More Details

Eranthis hyemalis is the first bulb to appear in the garden and a must for that.

I saw these in the wild this winter, merging with the wild snowdrop in a wood in Gloucestershire as far off as you could see. It gave me the resolution to plant more in my own garden - do it now and they will get better and better, gently self-sowing for decades.

They're also the first thing you can pick in quantity from the garden. Just float them in a pretty and colourful bowl.

Certain bulbs do better planted in the green, rather than in their dormant state. It's like lifting a clump from your own garden, and very quickly they settle in and will start to flower from next year on.

After three years you can then lift and divide your own and scatter them right through your garden, one bulb about 15cm (6in) from the next.

Genus Eranthis hyemalis
Type Hardy Perennial Bulb
Common Name Aconites
Soil Type Fertile
Scent Unscented
Site Shade, Part Shade. They do best under deciduous trees and shrubs.
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 10cm (4in)
Spacing Plant 2.5cm (1in) deep.
Care Tips Leave them to spread undisturbed, best divided whilst still 'in the green'.
Flowering February - March
Vase Life Look best on their own, either in a short glass or floating in a bowl. You can also add dried beach leaves to the bowl. They open up most fully in sunlight but look pretty at night under a table lamp.
